iServi News | 8 February 2019 | Term 1, Week 1
Welcome to the start of the new school year. It has been a very exciting week at the College as we welcomed students back to the school including a new cohort of Year 7 students and 22 new students across the other year levels.
I hope that you enjoyed your break together as a family and spent some quality time together. In our busy lives it is important to pause at times like these to reconnect and continue to build quality relationships with those around us.
As you would have read in my opening letter to all families, we have another very exciting year ahead at the College. Our plans continue to unfold as we strive to provide the best possible learning environment for our students.
In my opening letter to families, I mentioned that, in working toward our Community vision, we will be adopting the Berry Street Education Model. This model supports the sequential development of students’ physical, psychological, social and emotional capacities and helps them to identify and use character strengths to manage their own wellness and learning capacity. We are very excited that the positive impact this model will have on our community.
I also highlighted that our Ministry goals this year are to continue to grow our 24/7 Serve initiative and develop a Justice Education programme at the school. We will continue to develop our service opportunities with the release of updated community projects that will allow us to put our faith into action through helping others. We also look forward to our involvement in this year’s Australian Catholic Youth Festival in December.
I also mentioned that our goals for Learning include the ongoing development of STEM at the College in addition to the introduction of formal Gifted and Talented and Acceleration programmes. Our strong focus on literacy and numeracy also continues, along with our efforts to consistently develop meaningful and engaging ways to design and deliver our curriculum to enhance student learning outcomes.
In my opening letter I also highlighted the wonderful performance of our graduating class of 2018. Today we were thrilled that the high achieving students from this cohort, along with their families, could join us for our whole school assembly. During the assembly, we took time to recognise the efforts and accomplishments of these students and to highlight to the attributes that underpinned their outstanding achievements.
Our high performing students are wonderful role models to all students at the College. They demonstrate what can be achieved through working to one’s strengths and selecting an appropriate learning pathway, being resilient, managing one’s own wellness, high levels of application, rich collaboration with others and seeking strong and informative feedback from teachers.
Finally, I noted in my letter home the many exciting developments from a Stewardship perspective. This included the introduction of an updated sports uniform. I would like to acknowledge the great support from our families as we roll the uniform out across the College. Feedback from students and parents has been overwhelmingly positive and it has been excellent to see our students wearing the uniform with such pride. We are excited at the future development of other aspects of the sports and Priory uniforms and look forward to keeping you updated with these initiatives.
In other exciting news, we are only weeks away from unveiling our newly refurbished College Auditorium. This state-of-the-art complex will support the continued development of Performing Arts at the College. We look forward to providing you with details of the formal opening of the venue later this term.
As Servites, with Community as a core charism, we always welcome families and friends to our College. We want our families to engage with us in the development of their children but also celebrate our wonderful community together. On behalf of our very dedicated Servite Parents and Friends, I, therefore, invite all students, families and friends to attend our annual College Festival to be held on Friday 15 February at Servite commencing at 5.00pm and concluding at 8.00pm. Further details are available here. We very much look forward to your company.
