Dear Parents and Guardians

Welcome to Week 2

Parents as Partners

I write regularly about the important relationship that exists between families and the College. There is documented research that clearly highlights the positive impact of parent engagement in the educational lives of their sons and daughters. Consequently Servite has a strong focus on providing opportunities for parents to connect with the College to explore the progress of their children. In addition to providing an online connection to courses and results via SEQTA, we also strive to create face-to-face opportunities for in-depth discussion and conversation. A number of these types of events are scheduled at the College around this time of year.

Year 8 Retreat – Becoming Stewards of Creation

"What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?"

It was always thought that Pope Francis, named after Francis of Assissi, would bring a strong call for the Christian church to reflect on how we have become stewards of creation and our responsibilities as we move forward. With the release of Laudato Si, Pope Francis addressed, from a variety of different perspectives, the intimate relationship between the poor and the fragility of our planet. Pope Francis demonstrated conviction in explaining that everything in the world is connected and calls us to seek other ways of understanding the economy, progress and the value of each creature. He explained the need for forthright and honest debate and the serious responsibility of international and local policies, while reflecting on our own throwaway culture. The call to stewardship does not come lightly as we face global warming and its effects not only on our life but those around the world.

Servite Missions Around the World

The Servite Order demonstrate to us as a College how we can work towards pursuing justice throughout the world. The Servite Friars and Sisters work in various missionaries including those in Zululand, Swaziland, Chile and Brazil where they operate, and support various schools, aged care homes and orphanages. These ministries are only a few of the many great works that they dedicate their lives to. The Servites also work for ecological sustainability, saving the Amazonian forests as well as working extensively on ecumenical and interfaith ministries, creating unity across faiths and cultures.

Locally the Servite Order works in various ministries including hospitals, aged care, child services and education. Our Servite Sisters operate Kora, an early learning centre for disadvantaged families in our local community. Our Year 9 students work to support Kora throughout the year and select students have the opportunity to participate in their Christian Service Learning at Kora, working directly with youth in our community.
