Math Week was a resounding success, filled with exciting activities and challenges that brought out the joy of mathematics in every corner of our campus. Coinciding with the International Maths Day celebration on March 14th, it provided us with the perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in all things math.
This year, our theme was “Playing with Math,” aiming to celebrate mathematical games, puzzles, and other entertaining activities, while also encouraging exploration, experimentation, and discovery within the realm of mathematics.
Here’s a glimpse into the wonderful events that took place:
In Homerooms: Students enthusiastically immersed themselves in various math-centric games and puzzles, adding a touch of excitement to their learning experience. From the brain-teasing “Nurdle” to the strategic “Numbers from the Countdown,” our students showcased their problem-solving skills and creativity.
During break times, our ARC was buzzing with activity as students engaged in a myriad of math-related puzzles and games, delving into the world of numbers with gusto.
Inside Our Math Classes: Across different year levels, students delved deeper into mathematical concepts through engaging projects and competitions. Year 7 students participated in a global timetable competition, demonstrating their proficiency with times tables. Congratulations to Maxim (Max) Nikoloski and Andrew Vu for their stellar performance! Meanwhile, Year 8 students showcased their understanding of geometry by creating stunning pavement art based on rotation, reflection, and translations. Year 9 students immersed themselves in the Prime club game, while Year 10 students explored the intriguing world of SOMA cubes, enhancing their spatial reasoning skills.
Celebrating PI Day: Thursday marked the celebration of PI Day, an occasion to honour the mathematical constant π. Students had the opportunity to engage in creative activities, including circle art and crafting Pi-ku poems. The challenge to recite the most digits of pi added an element of friendly competition during break time, with Neve emerging as the champion, reciting an impressive 82 decimal places! Congratulations, Neve!
As we conclude Math Week, let’s carry forward the spirit of curiosity and exploration in our mathematical journey. With determination and a passion for learning, there’s no limit to what we can achieve!
