iServi News | 27 September 2019 | Term 3, Week 10
The end of last week showcased three days of hard fought and exciting volleyball games for our three Junior Volleyball Squad Teams. The Year 7/8 Girls Team, Year 8/9 Girls Team and Year 10 Boys Team were nominated in the WA Volleyball Schools Cup with fixtures played between 19 and 21 September at Warwick Stadium.
The Year 7/8 Girls Team played phenomenally, their skills and team cohesion has flourished this year and they have come so far from their first game. They placed third in their pool and just missed out on the second place needed to progress through to the finals.
One of our Year 7s to join this year has been thrilled with the opportunity to play the sport and develop some amazing skills and friendships:
My team went to Warwick Stadium to compete at the WA Volleyball Schools Cup last week. There were a lot of teams that were competing there and it was a really great experience to play against other schools and watch more advanced players compete too. We have worked so hard and improved since the first game we played this year which shows that anyone can do it too. Joining a volleyball team really helps with teamwork, making new friends and developing lots of skills. I hope all students consider joining the Volleyball Squad because it’s so rewarding and a very fun, energetic sport! – Arianna Brazzale (SE3)
The Year 8/9 Girls Team are really beginning to show real maturity in their tactics and gameplay. They faced off against an Honours team to start the day and they held their ground against a team whose skills far surpassed theirs. They took that fire into their divisional matches placing second in their pool, making it to the Quarter Finals decider. They fell short in their face off against their 1st place competitor from a different pool and weren’t able to progress further.
The Year 10 Boys team however, who formed only four weeks ago, played their first ever game during yesterday’s fixtures. They had a lot to learn in their training sessions and worked hard to pick up all they could. Phenomenally they placed fourth in their division and progressed to the Saturday finals. They faced off against Aquinas, who had finished on top of the division, so it was always going to be a challenging match. The boys played a fierce game, with a nail biting first set going down 23-25. This is where experience trumped spirit and our boys weren’t able to take out the win. Our students are keen to stick to it and confident next year’s Schools Cup will be in their favour!
Lewis Sumallo, one of the first of this new team to approach me to join the Squad, had the following to say after the competition:
Our team only formed four weeks ago, and we have been training two times a week since. We hadn’t expected to be included in the tournament, forming so late in the year, but we were so happy to have the opportunity to participate in the WA Volleyball School Cup. We played so well given how fresh our team is, we picked up so much from our coach and are eager to continue honing our skills! Unfortunately, our 9 training sessions were not enough to beat the other teams that had been training together for the whole year, and even consecutive years. I am so pleased I joined the Volleyball Squad and I look forward to my team getting better in time. – Lewis Sumallob (SC7)
A huge congratulations to all the Junior Volleyball Squad students, for their courage and motivation to join the Squad, their dedication throughout the year and for their incredible display in both play and attitude this last week.
There are no further tournaments remaining for the Volleyball Squad and we are now transitioning into Preseason Training for the 2020 Volleyball Season. If you have ever considered joining the Squad, Term 4 is the perfect time to do this. We are working on skill basics and fundamental techniques. The sooner you start training, the sooner you’ll see those results and the more prepared you’ll be for the first game in April 2020.
