Year 8 Woodwork
Our Woodwork project this semester was to create and build a pencil or phone holder of some kind. I have really enjoyed this project for several reasons. One reason being in the name of the task, “a pencil or phone holder of some kind”. Basically, as long as it could hold a phone or pencils, you could create any design you could think of. I really enjoyed this aspect because it’s simply just fun to design something and then craft it, but also because it means that your build is going to be truly unique. Instead of having the whole class build a box with specific dimensions and just different pattern design, for example, it means that almost no two students’ projects will be the same, which is a really fun idea.
The project steps went as follows: First you would research other pencil/phone holders online, say what you like about the designs, what you don’t like, what you could do to make it better if you were to make it. Next, you would start designing options for your project and choose one of your three designs to actually make. You would mark out on your chosen wood the exact cuts you would make, cut out all your pieces, glue all your pieces together, file/sand your project down to the exact shape you want it to be, and finally you would finish the wood or paint it.
Our designs will be finished in the next couple of weeks…
