Analysis of the electoral process in Western Australia formed a significant part of the Civics and Citizenship topic completed by Year 9 Humanities and Social Sciences students this term.
The practical application of the theory required the students to be active participants in their own election. During the lead up to the election, students communicated and collaborated in groups to devise their own political parties, beliefs, values and manifestos and and to develop and deliver marketing campaigns in order to win a mock election.
The activity culminated in an ‘Election Day’, in which the students heard from two past Servite graduates. We were pleased to hear from the Member for Balcatta, David Michael MLA and then from Mr James Rowe who is a Research Assistant in addition to standing as a candidate for the South Ward in the next local election. They both generously shared their insights and we enjoyed a behind-the-scenes glimpse into party politics and the campaign process in the lead up to and during election day.
