iServi News | 16 August 2019 | Term 3, Week 4
On Friday 9 August, our Interpriory Athletics Carnival was held at the WA Athletics Stadium. We were greeted by perfect weather for a day of healthy Priory rivalry on the track and in the stands. Our Priory leaders arrived early to create the perfect atmosphere. Banners and symbols of their respective Priory were on show for when the students and staff of Servite College arrived.
The Year 12s started our carnival with their entrance dance. An initiative that was started last year, and a great way to open the carnival. It also provided the opportunity for the 12s to shine at their final Priory Carnival. There were some interesting dance moves that took some precise choreography and obvious practice. Well done to all of the Year 12s for starting the day in such a warm way.
Pre-carnival events were recorded at Servite College, prior to the carnival day. Javelin, discus, and for the first time 1500m, were the pre-carnival events. After the pre-carnival events OLS were heading the pack with Scenario chasing close behind. As with previous years the timing of the track events and carnival management software was provided by Timing Solutions. This allowed for our track events to be placed by time, even in events with multiple heats. Another new addition for 2019 was the introduction of hurdles. Thank you to all staff and students for embracing the changes with such a positive attitude.
After a day of intense competition it’s difficult to single out one Priory. But unfortunately there can be only one winner. Senario took out the Priory Athletics Shield in 2019. This makes it three in a row for the students in black. Congratulations to the Senario students and staff, well done on a fantastic performance. However, the day could not be what it was without the efforts of all students and staff, on behalf of the College ‘thank you’.
Results for the Priory Shield:
Place | Priory | Score |
1 | Senario | 2547 |
2 | Our Lady of Sorrows | 2451 |
3 | St Anthony | 2403 |
4 | San Clemente | 2213 |
5 | St Mary | 2159 |
6 | Annunziata | 2002 |
Individual Champions and Runners Up will be published once students have been recognised at a College assembly.
On the day students also participated in novelty events. The focus of these events is fun and participation for all students. Scheduling the pre-carnival events allowed for the expansion of novelty events in 2019. These events were run on the infield of the track throughout the day. The Priory that wins ‘Grenville’ at the Athletics Carnival will hold onto Grenville Gorilla until the Swimming Carnival in 2020. It was very close for the minor placings; however, Our Lady of Sorrows were the clear winner in 2019, backing up their Grenville win in 2018.
We look forward to seeing our top athletes compete at the ACC Athletics Carnival on Monday, September 16. Students involved will be notified via email and letters in homeroom. Students selected are encouraged to attend athletics training in the lead up to the ACC event. A schedule for training will be published in the daily notices and sent to students in the ACC Squad. Training will be open to all students.
Once again, many thanks to the staff, students and parents for their ongoing support of sport at the College.
