iServi News | 11 June 2021 | Term 2, Week 8
Our Year 9 iCurious students have been working through the Just Start IT program this Semester and are now putting together their final presentations and prototypes in the lead up to the State Finals taking place in Week 11 of this Term.
The Just Start IT high school program supports students with know-how and industry mentors to develop ideas and apps that help solve practical problems with technology. Participating students learn to create and market their own tech-enabled Start Up. The program is project-based and students work with the latest tools and platforms as they develop their solutions to real-world challenges.
Currently there are 26 classrooms across Western Australia involved in the program. Every classroom is awarded a Start Up Mentor who attends the first of two sessions each week. Teachers then work with students on their projects in the remaining weekly session. At the conclusion of the semester, school teams pitch to an industry panel of experts to compete for a place in the semi-finals and finals.
Servite College has three teams participating in the Just Start IT Program this year:
- SafeSpace – Focused on developing a platform for Homeless Teens and everything they need to know or access, so they can remain housed and able to move forward.
- Gigl – Designing a platform for teen musicians to be discovered, connecting them with local venues, managers and opportunities.
- TrendE – Developing a platform that allows teens to find the latest fashion ‘look’, and then access the necessary garments at lower prices.
