Worldwide Italian Language Week is celebrated during 21-25 October. On Thursday 24 October, two students of Italian and Ms Gabriella Townsend were invited as guests of the West Australian Opera to attend a performance of the opera Macbeth by the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. This performance was especially aimed at young people who are currently studying Italian in Western Australian schools.
The invitation was extended to a limited number of schools, so we felt very privileged to be part of this auspicious evening, and delighted to be able to represent Servite College at the event. Below is a brief review of the evening by our two attending students.
Ms Gabriella Townsend
Head of Learning Area – Languages
We had the honour of representing Servite College at the West Australian Opera’s performance of Macbeth at His Majesty’s Theatre last Thursday evening. We began the night surrounded by many other eager students waiting to be let into the Theatre, once in we were escorted to an elevator where we were taken up to a private room for a pre-performance ‘meet and greet’. When we entered, we were greeted by the Italian Consul for Western Australia, Mr David Balloni and the newly appointed Ambassador to Canberra, Ms Francesca Tardioli. After introducing ourselves we also had the opportunity to meet some of the West Australian Opera staff and performers whilst indulging ourselves in some Italian cuisine and mingling with students and teachers from other schools. After some time, we were officially greeted and then taken into the theatre for the beginning of the performance. Lots of time and thought had gone into the performance and it was a very impressive and immersive experience. We would highly recommend attending an Italian opera to any students of Italian, it was a very enjoyable evening.
