iServi News | 13 September 2019 | Term 3, Week 8
The Languages Learning Area has been very busy this year and our students and staff have been working very hard on their respective programs.
A highlight and a chance to absorb not only the Language that the students are studying, but importantly some of the culture of the relevant country, took place in Week 7 of this term as part of National Languages Week.
All Year 7 students at Servite participated in an incursion with workshops that reflect some of the important cultural foci for both the Indonesian and Italian cultures. The students were given the opportunity to practise some drama, art and language in the first three workshops – we then all came together to debrief and celebrate through sharing some food (important in all cultures!).
Year 8 Italian students again shared in the local Italian scene by visiting our local Azzurri Bocce club for some instruction and pointers to this national game and we also were treated to some delicious authentic pasta (made by the nonne).
Year 8 Indonesian students were given the task to promote our Perth zoo with a focus on the Tropical Rainforest Trail which includes many Indonesian native animals such as the orangutan, the beruang madu (honey bear), Komodo dragon and the Sumatran elephant and tiger.
In Year 9 Italian the language curriculum has a large focus on food, shopping for and eating as well as mealtimes and etiquette. As a direct connection to this topic, this year we arranged for our Year 9 students to participate in a cooking workshop. The students were able to make their own pasta and hopefully will be able to share what they have learnt at home. Naturally the students were given the opportunity to taste their foods which was pronounced a resounding success.
Years 10 – 12 Italian students will be given an opportunity to celebrate their achievements in after-hours activities, as we understand the importance of continuity and do not wish to interrupt the school day for our senior students.
Please enjoy some of the student feedback below:
Year 9 Excursion Reviews
On Wednesday the 4th of September Ms Ierace’s Year 9 Italian class went to the Little Italian School, Main Street, for a pasta making excursion. It was a ten-minute walk, and once we arrived, we immediately felt welcomed by the owner, Ms Tania Pietracatella, and her family that worked there. Ms Pietracatella greeted us and explained how to make her delicious pasta. We took turns making it ourselves, and she guided us through our own pasta making experience (many mistakes were made). Eventually we were able to eat our own tagliatelle pasta, complete with shots of espresso for dessert! – Anastasia Delos Reyes (AN4)
Year 8 Bocce Excursion Review
On Monday the 2nd of September the Year 8s took off to the Azzurri Bocce Club for a fun day filled full of pasta and bocce! As soon as we arrived we could smell the beautiful scents of Nonna’s house. Upon arriving the Nonni demonstrated how to play bocce, whilst specifying the rules. We then went inside to eat pasta followed by ice cream. After lunch we all got in a small group to play many great games of bocce. Overall, the day was very amusing and we had a fantastic time! Grazie Mille Azzurri Bocce Club! – Aria Cozza (OLS2)
We first got to watch the Nonni teach us how to play bocce and whilst the Nonni were doing this the Nonne were cooking up a storm in the kitchen. After the Nonni had finished showing us how to play we all got to sit down and enjoy a nice homemade pasta dish which was made by the lovely Nonne. They would come around frequently with a smile on their face asking if we wanted more and if your answer was yes but only a little bit, a little bowl of pasta in their eyes meant a nice full bowl.
After we finished eating both the pasta and ice-cream, we got to play bocce! We got into teams of twelve and then from those teams spilt into six and those two groups versed each other. This was the first time I had played bocce so it was exciting, yet nerve racking. With the help of the Nonno I learnt to play bocce well and got better each time I rolled the ball.
I really enjoyed myself and hope that I can experience this again another time. All I can remember is the welcome of the Nonni and Nonne when we walked in as they were proud and had the biggest smiles on their faces. The best of part was that their smile was never wiped away throughout the afternoon

Year 7 Incursion Review
On the 5th of September the Year 7s had their Languages Week day. We had three sessions and we were paired with other Priories. I’m in Annunziata and we were paired with Senario in the first session. We did a scavenger hunt and my team won! After we did the scavenger hunt with Mrs Greenland, we all drew and coloured masks with Mrs Townsend and Mrs Potter after that we went to the Oratory and we were with Ms Ierace and Ms Rocca and we were learning about all the different kinds of Italians. My favourite part of the day was us eating pizza – YUM! Thanks for an amazing day! – Jazzy Femia (AN3)
