Critical Thinking
This week’s skill focus is on critical thinking. For our students to be ready to thrive in the world outside of school, they need to be able ‘think deeply and logically, and obtain and evaluate evidence … and acquire skills to make informed decisions about their lives’. (Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Education Declaration, 2019).
There is a lot talk in education circles about the importance of teaching critical thinking. Award-winning middle school teacher Heather Wolpert-Gawron describes critical thinking:
I define critical thinking through visualization: I picture the brain triggered by a thought that causes it to shoot signals from one area to another, forming pathways between neurons. Critical thinking is when the brain is active, making connections to the material and applying original thought to the concept. (Heather Wolpert-Gawron, 2017).
At Servite, our students learn that we all think differently. We encourage students to develop as learners by raising their awareness to the way they think. We teach our students to question, to reason and to justify ideas. Teachers create learning experiences that encourage students to be critical, curious and open minded. This can lead them to be original thinkers who are adaptable and flexible. We want our students to be able to understand concepts and new ideas deeply so that they can reflect and make connections in new and original ways.
