Mathematics Essentials is a subject which focuses on using mathematics effectively, efficiently and critically to make informed decisions. It provides students with the mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding to solve problems. These skills are applicable to a range of further learning, workplace and community settings. The course provides the opportunity for students to prepare for post-school options of employment and further training.
Our initial topics have covered Measurement, where students are combining their prior knowledge of perimeter, area, surface area and metric conversions and applying this knowledge to real world questions. When you want your pool to be surrounded by grass, your peculiarly shaped house to be painted and costed, or the question “If I wanted to cover that pyramid in chocolate, how much would it cost me?” answered, then these students are the next generation of critical thinkers that can solve such problems.
Using creativity, fantastic communication skills and a strong desire to collaborate, my Year 12 Essentials Mathematics class has worked tremendously hard so far this term supporting each other throughout their learning journey.

For the first time I have been involved in not only being helped but helping others. It’s a really enjoyable experience.

Using our Learning Intentions as a guide, I am finding myself organised by managing my resources and time so I am ready to go each lesson.
Jason Staunton (SC2)
I am doing well in this class because the maths we do is relatable to the real world. I finally know when I will use some of these maths formulas!
