Year 11 Biology and Visual Arts ATAR Camp
Our Year 11 Biology and Visual Arts ATAR students had the opportunity to attend a camp at our new regional campus in Nannup. This hands-on experience enabled students to engage with our curriculum in a unique setting as we implemented applied learning.
Biology students worked primarily on a lake and waterways on the property, testing water samples and documenting life forms. The Visual Arts students completed a plein air landscape painting under the direction of local artist Miranda Free. We finished the camp by hiking a trail, where our Biology students identified native trees, bushes and wildlife, whilst the Art students drew and recorded vegetation of the native floor.

Student Reflections
The Art/Biology camp was an amazing opportunity for both courses to be able to explore how the theory we have learnt this term relates to a practical setting. As Biology students, we studied the quality of the waterway, how to identify various species of trees and bushes and how to classify organisms found in the water. The campus is peaceful and relaxing, and the chalets and dining rooms are all newly renovated. The entire experience was very worthwhile for me and was full of amazing memories and learning experiences.

Last week’s camp in Nannup was an amazing experience, and I would love to do it again. The landscape is beautiful and it was so much fun being able to paint and draw our surroundings. It was also a great learning experience, with Miranda Free teaching us new techniques we can use for landscape painting. I had a great time with my friends and the bus rides were plenty of fun because everyone sang together.

I was fortunate enough to attend the Art/Biology camp at Nannup, where we had the opportunity to strengthen our bonds with our friends and teachers. We also had the chance to observe an ecosystem, which complemented our studies. The highlight had to be the toasties – they were phenomenal!

I truly enjoyed the experience of painting the beautiful landscapes with a professional artist at the Nannup Art/Biology camp. We learnt new skills and made memories we will never forget.
