Alumni Spotlight: Gregory Hall

My older brother Vernon Hall and younger sister Kristine Hall (now Jones) also attended Servite College, although it was called Saint Philips when my brother and I first attended the school. I have fond memories of my time at Servite College. It goes without saying that schooling has changed considerably since the days I went to school.

I enlisted in the Australian Defence Force immediately following my graduation and served in the Royal Australian Survey Corp. I was a mapmaker and although I enjoyed those years in the military, I wasn’t really cut out to be a soldier and returned to tertiary study and attended Secondary Teachers College in Nedlands. It was later called Nedlands College of Advanced Education and eventually it was one campus within the Edith Cowan University mix of campuses. After graduation in 1983 I worked as an English Teacher in schools across the state and after teaching in numerous schools finished with the education department in 2008 as HOD English at Belridge High School.

In 2009 I moved with my young family of two boys and my Canadian wife (who I met during a teaching exchange 1992) to British Columbia Canada, Kamloops; where I secured work as an administrator for School District 73. Having served as a Vice-Principal in several rural and city postings I eventually retired from education in 2022. My last posting was as inaugural Vice-Principal of the newly formed K-12 Arts School named after widespread consultation with the community as Kamloops School of the Arts – KSA. It was a joy to work there with such an exciting and talented community of educators and artists.

There were many delightful moments in my years at Servite College both in the sporting and academic arenas. I have always been a swimmer thanks to my mother’s support in nurturing and encouraging that interest. Servite College was also a motivator in creating a keen interest in swimming. We had many terrific swimmers at Servite College in the mid 70’s. I was chosen as School Swimming Captain in 1976 when we won the ACC Interschool Swimming Carnival. It was a proud moment for the school and for the squad of swimmers who competed. Even to this day 50 years later I have been involved in swimming. In September 2025 I once again competed in the BC 55+ games. It was fun and healthy to prepare for the games and meet so many delightful people along the way.

My time since graduation from Servite College in 1976 has been full of rich and rewarding experiences and challenges. Life has been good to me, and I believe Servite College was part of that mix of experiences that benefited me in those very early years.
