Alumni Spotlight: Jeffrey Callow (Class of 1975)

I graduated in 1975. My fondest memories of school were mostly related to sport. I played football and baseball and everything else that was going, especially volleyball during the lunch break which was always an event.

When I finished school, I worked in Perth until I was 22 and played amateur football. At 22, I decided to travel the world and went to England, Europe and America. I returned to Perth in 1984 but quickly got itchy feet again and travelled to Spain, where I got married in 1985. I have been living in Spain ever since and studied a law degree in Spanish, working mainly as a legal translator and specialising in civil and commercial law. I also founded the first AFL team in Spain and coached the national team for several years, in which we played in 4 European semi-finals and took part in the International Challenge Cup in Melbourne in 2005.

Spain has now become my home, but I have always loved Perth and now that I am retired, would love to spend spring and summer in Spain and spring and summer in Perth.

My other passion is music. I started playing the harmonica at 15 and have played in a number of bands successfully in Spain over the last 30 years. On a recent trip back home, I also discovered that three of my former classmates, Brendan Waddell, Zeno Bolzicco and Gerard Dean were also musicians and we have since formed a band, which will be performing at our 50th anniversary in mid-November.

It is exciting to think of seeing my fellow school mates again, many of whom I haven’t seen since the day I left Servite College, which was very different to what it is today.
