Alumni Spotlight: Ruth Loveranes

I graduated in 2006, which I can’t believe was 20 years ago! In high school, I was never sure what path I wanted to take in life, so I did a mix of Maths, Science and Social Science subjects. I played different sports (despite not being particularly athletic), got involved in the school theatre production, and was also part of the school band and choir. At Servite, I was always encouraged to just ‘have a go’ at different things, so that’s exactly what I did.

Though there were a lot of memorable social events and school camps, my fondest memories at Servite are of the banter and hijinks between my fellow band and choir members during rehearsals. Music is a fantastic team sport and there’s a lot less running around.

After high school, and after trying different degrees, I ended up studying law. I became a lawyer and practised in commercial litigation and dispute resolution. After a few years of that, I wanted to (once again) try something different and started working in law reform. I now have a role in the public sector progressing legislative reform projects. It’s been a real privilege to work on projects that have a real impact on the justice system.

Work is just one part of my life though. I have a wonderful husband and two wonderful children and we’ve settled into a very happy family life. Despite being a busy working parent, you’ll still see me having a go at different things, whether it be volunteering at local community events, going on hikes with my husband or just learning new songs to play to the kids on the ukulele!

If there’s anyone out there who just doesn’t know what path to take in life, just pick one, take a few steps and see how you go. You might have to try a few different paths before you find the right one.
