Geography Camp

This term, our Geography students visited the College’s Nannup campus to gain first-hand insight into the impact of bushfires on the environment and how communities can prepare to reduce risks to lives, property and natural landscapes.

Working alongside members of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), students toured local sites to learn how prescribed burns are used to lower fuel loads and help prevent catastrophic fires. They also participated in an immersive virtual reality scenario, where they experienced a home under threat from bushfire and made decisions to protect themselves and their property.

DFES also showcased their firefighting vehicles, giving students a hands-on look at the equipment, safety features and capabilities used in emergency responses.

To conclude the experience, students worked with DFES personnel to review the Nannup campus Bushfire Action Plan. They will now prepare a report for the College Executive, evaluating the current plan and presenting recommendations to further strengthen its effectiveness.

The camp was successful and the students had a memorable time alongside the ATAR Biology students.
