Year 9 Nannup Rotations

During Weeks 4 to 6, the Year 9 students took part in the Nannup Experience, a program that continues to demonstrate clear value. Students engaged in relevant, real-world learning by exploring community challenges and developing practical solutions. The opportunity to apply their Science and Humanities learning beyond the classroom, through environmental observation, problem-scoping, and examining the town’s social and economic context, gave them a real sense of how their studies connect to community needs.

The experience also provided meaningful time for students to strengthen relationships with their peers and step back from digital distraction. By working together, navigating shared tasks and responsibilities, and spending time outdoors, they developed social skills and independence that are difficult to practice in a standard school setting. The Nannup Experience remains a purposeful and formative part of the Year 9 program, reinforcing both personal development and applied academic learning.

The experience concluded with students presenting their project pitches to representatives from the Shire of Nannup. Proposals ranged from a revamp of the Nannup Tip, to a community greenhouse initiative, to a Blackwood River clean-up plan, among other great ideas.

The winning group was Grace Melo, Etsuo Namgay, Mitchell Potter, and Ricardo Varela with their HelioPlant proposal. They were recognised for the strength of their ideas, the clarity of their presentations, and their understanding of the town’s context and needs. The Shire expressed genuine appreciation for the students’ insight and the seriousness with which they approached the challenge.
