YEAR 12 CHEM | Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research

On Tuesday the 5th of August, Year 12 ATAR Chemistry students had the opportunity to visit Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, to further supplement our current topic of proteins and amino acids.

I found this a very inspiring and interesting experience as I was able to learn about what areas they researched, such as cancer, cardiovascular disorders, rare genetic disorders and many others.
Some memorable parts of the day were when we conducted gel electrophoresis on a protein sample in the lab. Additionally, we had small tour of the building and were able to learn about what current research and development was happening.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience, as we were able to learn about the real life applications and research surrounding proteins, connecting the information learnt in class to how it is used real life.
