“The Syrian Crisis is the greatest tragedy on this century – a disgraceful humanitarian calamity with suffering and displacement unparalleled in recent history.” Antonio Guterres: Secretary-General, United Nations.
During Refugee Week, 16–23 June, the Servite College community will participate in the Act for Peace Ration Challenge as a Christian Service Learning project.
The Ration Challenge asks students to eat the same rations as a Syrian refugee during Refugee Week and get sponsored to do it. By putting themselves in the shoes of refugees, participants will:
- learn about global issues;
- develop empathy for others; and
- feel empowered to make a difference in the world.
The money raised provides refugees with food, healthcare and education, and supports other communities around the world threatened by conflict and disaster
Full details are available here: https://actforpeace.rationchallenge.org.au/
Completing the Ration Challenge is difficult, but this is when growth and deep learning occurs, and we ar. Having said that, we recognise that the Challenge is not as difficult as it is for those living through this tragedy; eating these rations or worse all the time and trying to find refuge in a foreign country.
I invite the College community to support this very worthy cause. Building on the example set last year, a number of students, parents and teachers have registered, and donations can be made through the following links:
This is a powerful way of generating much-needed funds and raising awareness of the plight of refugees and empathy among the College Community,
Mr Chris Callus
Assistant Deputy Principal – Service and Justice Education
