In preparation for Senario Feast Day on Tuesday 24 September, the Priory is fundraising for Wheelchairs for Kids.
According to United Nations World Health estimates, wheelchairs are desperately needed for millions of severely disabled children throughout under-resourced countries of the world.
Wheelchairs For Kids (WFK) is an organisation whose mission is to manufacture and distribute wheelchairs to children, enabling them to gain a new level of freedom and mobility.
Every single wheelchair supplied by WFK makes an enormous difference for a child in need, and for their community.
Staffed entirely by Perth volunteers, WFK is financed from funds donated by many different philanthropic individuals, businesses, clubs, schools, and government bodies.
Around 340 wheelchairs are produced every month (approximately 3550 per year) and they are then subsequently distributed worldwide. Locally designed specifically to conform with World Health Organisation guidelines, the wheelchairs are built specially for rough terrain. The chairs are adjustable for the child’s size, with postural supports, head rest, harness, a waterproof cushion, tray, and tool kit. Chairs are packaged with a handmade knee rug, and a knitted toy to help the child become comfortable in their new chair.
On delivery of the chairs to the receiving sites, agency and hospital personnel, therapists and individuals are involved in providing therapy in the field to ensure each chair is correctly adjusted and fitted to the receiving child.
For every $200 donated in support of the WFK program, a child gains a new wheelchair giving them much greater independence, and often easing the burden for personal carers.
As a Senario Community, we are aiming to raise $600 which will provide three wheelchairs. We are also requesting ring pulls from aluminium cans to be bought in as WFK sell these ring pulls to assist with making more wheelchairs.
The Senario Captains are collecting donations from students during Homeroom. Your support for this great cause is appreciated, even donating a small amount of money will help us reach our target of $600.
