iServi News | 15 November 2019 | Term 4, Week 5
Our Alexis Research Centre came alive with the rich array of Servite’s second Visual Arts Showcase for this year. This student exhibition is a display of student Artwork from Year 7 to Year 12, across a range of techniques and styles, including two and three dimensional work, as well as Photography, Short Film and Woodwork.
On display were Year 8’s first attempts at rendering from a still life – with some very impressive results. The Year 9 students created some interesting (and sometimes scary) interpretations of GRIMM fairytales and the Year 10 Giacometti sculptures and Mexican Day of the Dead skulls displayed incredible balance, pattern and character. Senior school Art students had on display their thought provoking, personally expressive pieces. The Year 11 ATAR portrait paintings were particularly notable.
Once again there was the inclusion of Furniture and Wood pieces from the Design Technologies. Alex Caroe and Chloe Lazaroo (Year 10) built tables which were particularly impressive and demonstrated the relationship between Arts and Wood Technology. Clocks created by Year 11 students displayed elements of resin inlay and use of the departments new Laser cutter.
Thank you to all students whose work was exhibited – they should feel very proud of their creative efforts. And a big Thank You to the staff, parents, current and ex-students who supported the Arts on the evening.

Woodwork at Servite
The Technologies learning area is a practical area that promotes critical thinning and creativity. This year, woodwork students were given the task of designing personal projects that use two or more different materials. Some students used the colleges new laser cutter, resin, glass or multiple timber when creating their projects. The results are a credit to the students’hard work and where displayed to great effect in this semester’s arts showcase.
