iServi News | 7 June 2019 | Term 2, Week 6
Servite College strives to provide our students with excellent co-curricular opportunities and the Volleyball Program is a long standing and successful example of this effort. Our goal is to support our students’ personal development; through lifting player skills and encouraging physical fitness; developing life skills like self-management, communication and commitment; building self-confidence and perseverance; and giving them a social haven in team bonding and cohesion.
Just this week we had two girls and three boys express their interest in joining and we’d love to see this continue. Year 7-9 Boys and Girls, we want you! Should any students wish to become our newest recruit, please contact Ms Viktoria Marevic via email to viki.marevic@servite.wa.edu.au or come and chat at the Health and Physical Education Office.
WAVJL weekly results
It was a very exciting round last week. We had all teams playing, three teams competing at exactly the same location and at exactly the same time, the first ever Servite College DERBY in the WA Volleyball Junior League and two teams taking home wins.
Our Year 10/11 Girls Team and Year 11/12 Girls Team were playing off the back of losses the week before. It was going to be a happy day for one team with Servite guaranteed a win for the derby they were about to play. The two teams faced off against each other – the Year 11/12s (white) the favourites going in with the years of experience they had over the relatively fresh-faced Year 10/11 players. Not to suggest it was entirely one sided, with the Year 10/11s (black) working feverishly to keep up, surprising their friendly foes with just how much they had improved since their collective Squad training in Term 1. Both teams had some aggressive serves, solid court coverage and nifty ball placements but experience trumped heart on this occasion, with the Year 11/12s taking the win in all three sets. The girls had an absolute blast, playing with their peers and comrades, laughs and smiles all round for this landmark game.
The Year 7/8 Girls Team were playing on the court next to the derby – it was very much a Servite affair at the Ballajura Indoor Sports Centre. The girls had a new recruit join them for her first time this week and they worked so well together. On the back of a super close and exciting game last week, we were hopeful to use the momentum to take a win. The girls keep learning and growing with every match they play, becoming more confident in themselves and in one another. This weeks game wasn’t theirs against Rossmoyne 7 White, but we’re not far off.
Making a formidable start to the WAVJL season, the Year 8/9 Girls Team have since had a rough trot the last couple of weeks with two losses. They girls always play well, with a solid skill base, excellent rapport with their Coach, Jasmine Truong and motivation to play well. The girls had a big challenge playing against a predominantly Year 10 team with another year of size, skill and experience on our girls. They also had another coach step in to take them during this week’s game. All things considered they played exceptionally well, keeping the sets close and pushing to win every point. Back to winning this week for sure!
The biggest news to hit this week, the Year 10/12 Boys Team have their first win! The boys have started this season as the clear underdogs, some harsh games and a massive shock at the calibre of the teams within the division. They had the added challenge of making the long journey to Mandurah for a late-night game the week before. There is no doubt our boys have the commitment and the desire to play, learn and develop which they have been doing since they first came together early this year. All their work has finally paid off. A tight game and fierce fight against Churchlands SHS. Our boys lost the first set with a close 18-25, but came back with a vengeance to settle the scores for the second set with a 25-9 win. The final set went into overtime with points being won tit-for-tat until we pushed through to become the ultimate victors. Well done boys, keep up the good work.
