Year 10 Humanities Market Day
As part of our Year 10 Humanities program, students worked collaboratively in small groups to plan and run a business of their choice. Key learning skills such as building capacity as entrepreneurs and communicating in teams were developed throughout this project.

Head of Learning Area – Humanities
Last week the Year 10s participated in Market Day. We were required to come up with an idea for a stall with the goal of making a profit and to learn some key business concepts along the way. This year, we had to face some unique challenges due to the ongoing pandemic. This pushed us to think outside the box, and not just copy the stalls that worked from previous years. In the beginning, none of my group thought we would make a profit, but in the end we had great success. This year’s Market Day helped us understand the troubles businesses are currently going through due to the coronavirus. Overall the day was a great experience, and provided an insight on the inner workings of the businesses that provide for our every needs and wants.

Market Day was extremely busy for our stall selling glitter and beads. We devised a number of products and services to suit a variety of target consumers. We learned through this project the process of entrepreneurship and the practice of setting up a small business. Along the way we developed skills such as team collaboration, analysing data to determine prices and quantities and the processes required to open a business in time. My team overcame many unique challenges like online payments and restrictions on food products caused by COVID-19 precautions by careful planning, advertising and introducing new ideas. All these aspects helped us understand the entrepreneurial journey in constructing a successful business. We overall made a profit of $249.40 after only spending $8.10. The day was a definite success for our school community to donate to a worthy charity, Kora.
