In Semester One, Year 9 Wood Technology students designed and manufactured small storage boxes featuring some beautiful decorative lids.
To commence this task, everyone in the class made their own simple box by cutting out and gluing pieces of their desired wood together into the box shape.
As the next step in their design and development process, students used the drafting software AutoCAD to create a motif for the lid of their boxes. The unique geometric designs were all created by the students themselves with their knowledge of the elements and principles of design, including balance, rhythm, pattern, emphasis, contrast, unity and movement. Once the AutoCAD designs were complete, they were cut from MDF using our laser cutter and glued into the lid of the boxes.
The addition of coloured resin was the final stage of this decorative process. Students were required to pour the coloured resin into the gaps of the design and afterwards sand the box lids down to achieve the smooth surface we see in the final products. The inclusion of resin added a final flourish of aesthetic value.
The class produced some wonderful design work and I am looking forward to seeing what our students will create this semester.
