Amongst a worldwide pandemic, while we were confined at home, our Year 9 Design – Fabrics Technology class found a way to have fun while learning how to sew like an absolute pro.
As we committed to online learning, we were introduced to the hand sewing activity ‘Birds of Joy’. The project allowed us to create an adorable little stuffed bird out of a few pieces of scrap material. It taught us how to recycle what would be useless fabric, into something cute and fun.
We initially received a small kit. From stuffing to pins, the kit contained absolutely everything we needed to create our little decorative ‘bird of joy’. By carefully following a set of instructions, we delicately sewed our birds together.
The activity helped to calm our nerves and distracted us from the chaos going on around us. We learnt how to embroider flowers, hearts and stars onto the wings of our birds to make them unique and contrasting from each other. Each one, marked with a special design we embroidered. We sewed the two sides together and stuffed them with fluffy stuffing to make them come to life. After gathering all the little birdies of the whole class, we put them on a small tree branch to display; showing our class as a collective and how we made it through a stressful pandemic, positively.
Overall we both had such a great time designing and creating our little birdies. The activity not only taught us how to sew and embroider but brought us closer as a class. We would 100% do this activity again to use the birdies as a cute decoration component.
