Student Code of Conduct: Feeling Empowered
This week, the focus of our exploration of the Student Code of Conduct is feeling EMPOWERED.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, to feel empowered is to feel; ‘confident and in control of one’s life’. Our students have recognized the importance of feeling confident and in control, hence including it in their Code of Conduct. Developing confidence is something that young people can struggle with. According to ReachOut.com, a confident person:
- does what they believe is right, even if it’s unpopular
- is willing to take risks
- admits their mistakes and learns from them
- is able to accept a compliment
- is optimistic.
Confidence is not something people are born with, it is something that grows within a person the more they practice and adjust their thinking and mindsets. It takes courage to do what is right, to take risks, to be honest about our mistakes and learn from them, but as we do so, we grow in confidence and feel empowered.
Included in the Student Code of Conduct are ways the students identified to feel empowered and what to do when someone isn’t feeling this way:
At Servite we want to feel EMPOWERED.
In order to feel this way, we will…
- Use verbal praise and give physical rewards
- Acknowledge others and the opinions/ideas
- Provide resources to succeed
- Create a happy, positive environment
- Enable students to be independent and make their own decisions
- Don’t judge others – encourage them to be themselves
- Encourage active participation in College activities
- Represent the College well in the community
- Be accountable for our words and actions
When someone isn’t feeling this way, we will….
- Encourage them to pursue activities which make them feel empowered
- Praise and reward their achievements
- Remind them of the many avenues of support at the College
- Ensure their ideas and opinions are being heard and acknowledged
