iServi News | 21 February 2020 | Term 1, Week 3
Our Year 8 students at Servite College are the stage of their learning journey where they start to seek out knowledge and information for themselves as they move to become independent learners who are world-ready and life-ready.
To do this they need to develop skills. At Servite, we believe all our students need to develop the skills of critical thinking; creativity and innovation; communication and collaboration; and enterprise.
Year 8s show us that they are developing these skills when they seek to understand why they are learning what they are learning; when they start to reflect more on their learning and look for feedback from peers and teachers. They begin to set goals for themselves and their learning and they start to connect prior knowledge to new knowledge. They want to have choice about how they present their learning and look to using digital technologies to solve problems, as well as their imaginations, when they innovate. When working in teams, Year 8s start to recognise where their strengths lie. They also realise that they can connect in person, but also in the digital space.
Year 8 is an exciting and dynamic time of Learning and throughout the year we will see some snapshots of these students and the skills they are developing.

What have you noticed about how learning has changed from Year 7 to Year 8?
One difference I’ve noticed moving into Year 8 is that I am understanding the content more than I did in Year 7, I think we’re getting into learning in a deeper way.
When you work in groups, what would you say are your greatest strengths?
When I work in groups, I’ve found that I’m really good at managing people and keeping them on task.
Eddy Yang (SC1)
What do you think is important about reflecting on your learning?
When I reflect on my learning when I’m at home, it helps me find answers to things that I still need to find out
What are some of the differences you’ve noticed between Year 7 and Year 8?
Moving into Year 8 I’m finding that we’re getting more homework. I usually try to tackle homework and assignments as soon as I get them so I know I will get them done.
What are you learning today?
Today we’re learning how to Photoshop. What I love about Photoshop is that I can take a picture and I can add something to the photo that wasn’t there before to make it better.
