Developing the Whole Student
As a Catholic school, we are charged with the important responsibility of ensuring the development of the whole student. At Servite we aim to offer many different pathways and growth opportunities to ensure that students are fully engaged and continue to strive toward ‘becoming all that they were created to be’.
A snapshot of the many and varied growth opportunities available at Servite was provided at our whole school assembly this week. It was most affirming to see the enthusiastic involvement of so many students in the different activities that will support their ongoing growth and development as whole persons.
Our whole school assemblies are organised and run by the students, with the leaders from St Anthony Priory in charge this week. During the assembly, students were invited forward to update our community on key events and happenings over the past few weeks.
The below summary provides a small snapshot of the many activities on offer at the College which were highlighted at the assembly:
NAS Video
We have been thrilled with the enthusiastic involvement of students in NAS this term and celebrated this high level of student participation through the presentation of a video to the students. We of course continue to encourage all students to become involved in sport at Servite. Click here to view the video
Presentation of the ACC Swimming Team
We are most proud of our very dedicated and hard-working ACC Swimming Team that was formally presented to the community at the assembly. The team has been training for many weeks under the tutelage of Ms Potter and Ms Plant and will be competing next Friday at HBF Arena. The students attended Swim Camp this week and were presented with their new ACC Servite College Shirts in acknowledgment of them making the team. We know that the students will wear their uniform with pride at the Carnival and will complete with great passion and energy in representing their school.
During the assembly we also presented the Inter Priory Swimming Champions to the community. Click here to view.
VET Awards
We were very pleased to be able to present VET Certificates to Chris Taylor (AN6), Luke Berry (SC7) and Darren Nheu-Leong(SC1) at the assembly. We acknowledge their high levels of effort and application in achieving this excellent result.
Christian Service Learning
Key recent Christian Service Learning initiatives highlighted during the assembly included the wonderful work from a group of staff and students who organised and cooked food for the ‘Homelessness We Care’ project. Staff and students spent an evening serving the food and engaging in conversation with approximately 120 homeless people in Perth city. This initiative provides an authentic and important experience in supporting those less fortunate than ourselves.
We also focused attention on another initiative at the College which provides students the opportunity to support people in need, ‘Write for Rights’. Students gather each week to determine areas of injustices and write to relevant authorities to advocate for improved conditions and circumstances for people impacted.
Our ‘Chef Brothers’ continue to cook food items for sale to raise money for key organisations.
Our focus on justice education and service opportunities has been highlighted in the latest edition of The Record which is available here
Debating Team
Our College Debating team is again competing this year and all interested students are invited to become involved. We wish our students well in this exciting competition.
Pedal Prix
Following on from our inaugural involvement in the Pedal Prix competition last year, students are excited to again take part in 2019. The competition sees students design, build and run their pedal powered car on a stipulated course over a specified time period. This exciting concept allows student to genuinely test their engineering designs and concepts in a real-world situation.
Year 7 Camp
During the assembly, we heard a report of the many adventures and experiences that took place on the recent Year 7 Formation Camp. Students engaged fully in this wonderful experience and are to be congratulated for their contribution in ensuring the success of the camps. The Formation Camp signifies is the culmination of series of specifically designed activities integrated into the curriculum since the start of the term to support the successful transition of students to the College. We have been thrilled with the positive and enthusiastic way that our Year 7 students have become fully involved in the life of the school.
The above list of activities and initiatives is but a small indication of the plethora of opportunities available at the College to support the develop of our students as whole persons. We provide a ‘weekly wrap up’ video of events each week for parents which is available in each edition of iServi. The latest video can be accessed here.
We strongly encourage students to become involved in the life of the College both in and out of the classroom. This involvement builds school spirit, helps develop lifelong friendships, develops skills and understandings and importantly provides individualised growth opportunities for students.
Our 2017 and 2018 Yearbooks, to be distributed at the end of this month, will reflect the diverse activities and student experiences at our College. Each current student who attended the College during those years will receive their copies of the publications via their Homeroom. We will be inviting our Alumni to collect their copies from the College and look forward to reconnecting with our graduates. We’re also excited to be able to share some Yearbook highlights in iServi next week. For any queries about the Yearbooks or Alumni, please email mct@servite.wa.edu.au
