The Year 10s have been working on producing their skulls for the ‘Mexican Day of the Dead Skulls’ unit this semester. Have a look below to see their progression.
The students began the design process of their skulls, taking into consideration the elements of line, pattern, colour, balance and form.
Once the class completed designing their skulls, they used newspaper and tape to create armatures. This will become the foundation the clay will be wrapped around when sculpting.
Finally, students began making their clay skulls by wrapping a sheet of clay around the newspaper base shape. From here they moulded the clay into the shape of their skull.
When put into the kiln, the newspaper armature disintegrates, leaving only the clay that students moulded into the shapes of skulls. From here, students began painting their skulls based on the colour studies and media tests completed in the design phase.
After painting their skulls, students began decorating their skulls based on their original design. Some students used Posca pens to draw detailed designs whilst others added other decorations such as feathers, flowers, glitter and pearl stickers. Students also have the option to have their skull sit on a board that could be hung, allowing for a possible background and different method of presentation.
