The Year 10 Fine Art students have been working on the theme of Still Life and have produced an A3 pencil drawing and oil painting in class over the semester.
Students began the process by setting up a still life at home and taking a variety of photos using mood lighting. One of these photos was then used as a reference for the drawing. Students then traced the photo onto a sheet of A3 paper. They were then expected to apply the tonal rendering techniques learned in class to create form in the drawing. The finished products turned out well and it was interesting to see how each student interpreted the task and how they applied shadows and highlights to their pencil drawing.
After completing the pencil drawing, students had the choice to use the same still life image or reshoot another still life to create a different arrangement of objects for the next painting task. Students also researched art movements that painted the still life genre. They were then asked to choose a movement and apply the characteristics and style of the art movement to their own work. This project challenged students to use colour values to create form in the subject matter in their still life. Students also painted with oil paint for the first time too and responded well to the slow drying and textural qualities of the paint.
Students were again successful with this task, managing to create a work that captures the essence of their still life and the art style that they replicated.
The Year 10 students in this class have invested a lot of time both in the classroom and at home to complete these tasks. The success you see in their artwork demonstrates perseverance, persistence, patience and a determination to succeed. Every student in this class has been successful and should feel very proud of their works and efforts.
