Our Year 11 Chemists have been analysing the components of food colouring used in many food products that we consume daily. The analytical technique of thin layer chromatography (TLC) allowed students to separate and identify the components of each colour and test the purity of the substances.
Analysis involves developing the chromatogram (stationary phase) in a chamber with the solvent (mobile phase). Once developed the students takes the requisite measurements and report on their findings.
Analytical techniques, such as thin layer chromatography enable students to experience methods of investigation which reveal the components of unknown liquid substances.
