On the last Sunday of the October school holidays, the Year 11 Outdoor Education class met at Hillarys Boat Harbour to catch the ferry to Rottnest Island for our three night expedition. On our expedition we focused on leadership, cycling and snorkelling skills. We snorkelled at Little Salmon Bay, Little Armstrong Bay, Little Parakeet Bay and The Basin. We also cycled to the West End of the island, which was the hardest task and a very big challenge for most of the class. Everyone cycled up the Oliver Hill Battery to go on a gun and tunnel tour, which features military remnants from WWII. We were able to go underground through the tunnels and see how the engines and the gun are powered. This was a really interesting experience for both students and teachers. Along most of the trips around the island, we were stopping to see humpback whales breaching and seals sunbathing on the rocks. Our group dinner on the final night of our expedition was a highlight as the whole class cooked up a Mexican feast and were able to enjoy burritos and chat around a big table. Overall, the expedition was an amazing experience filed with great memories and learning opportunities.
