Year 7 students have been studying Western Australian author Jack Davis and his play Honey Spot in English classes this Term.
Jack Davis is one of Australia’s most influential authors and is recognised for incorporating the themes of identity and Aboriginality within his texts. Honey Spot is a play written by Davis set in regional WA in the 1980s about two cultures living together. It discusses different philosophies on land conservation and how friendship can overcome racial differences.
Students have tackled the issues in a thought-provoking manner, demonstrating great maturity in the process. The current task for the Year 7s is to perform a selection of scenes from the play. They have been working hard memorising lines, establishing characters and working in a collaborative environment to bring the scenes to life.
Students have also practised rehearsing in various environments, including an amphitheatre, to explore a traditional style of theatre. Performing in different environments stimulates creative thinking and forces students to explore their external stimuli to engage with the play using a variety of voice and movement techniques.
It takes courage and focus to perform in front of peers. Well done, Year 7s!
