The Year 9 cohort began their combined Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) and Science problem-based learning experience in Week 5, with team building, creative and critical thinking activities. It saw students critique different types of inventions, learn how to work through conflict and begin to explore the ways teams can use design thinking to solve problems.
Their first day of the program had the students arrive at the Monte Senario campus in Nannup and go through a series of grounding, bring down and connecting activities. A Yarning Circle begins the welcome including a focus on expectations and hopes for the learning experience. Walking the pristine surrounds of Monte Senario allows students to undertake a physical challenge whilst also reconnecting with nature.
Non-tech activities from boardgames to water-based time out on the lake enables students to connect with each other as well as form new bonds with their peers.
Night time and free time activities were co-designed with students, with the cohort giving input into what they might like to do at the campus, with the Year 9 student leaders collating results and prioritising the items to bring down and activities to do.
Next week we will focus on the learning experiences for the HASS and Science classes as day two of the program has a focus on fieldwork.
