In Science this week, Year 7 students used a dichotomous key as a tool to identify species by their scientific name.
Ms Moira Coady
Teacher
“Today we did a hard activity were we had to name animals by their genus and species. It was difficult at times because we had to translate Latin and Greek words into English, but other than that I really enjoyed the activities.”
Blake Rzemek (SC6)
“In class we have recently been learning about Dichotomous keys. Today we did an activity matching animals to their species by using a a step by step process. Through answering a series of questions about the animals we could find out what type they are.
Nethaya Liyange (SC6)
“In this lesson we learned that Greek and Latin words are often used for scientific names. They are extremely difficult to translate and sometimes don’t connect to the English name creating problems.”
Keaton Ngo (SC5)
“Today we were trying to find the scientific name of some animals and we underestimated how hard it would be translating Latin words to English. Overall it was really fun for me and my partner Ella.”
Chloe Cabanyan (SC7)
“Today in class my partner and I were classifying an array of species. It was tough figuring out which names applied to which specie as it was whole other language! At first the activity was difficult but as we progressed through the activity we quickly got the hang of it!”
Dylan Dikolli (SC2)
“I enjoyed identifying species because it was fun easy and we could do it with our friends! Some of the animals looked goofy but it was fun!”
Isabella Byles (SC1)
“Today we were revising for our test about dichotomous keys. We had to go through a list and math the genus and species to the right animal.”
Stefan Constance (SC1)
“We’ve been studying dichotomous jeys and I lke how challenging it is. It’s very fun to be able to identify animals with a dichotomous.”
Marcus Ewen (SC6)
