Earlier this year, our Year 10 GATE class delved into the captivating world of Criminology and Forensics. In our studies, we explored intriguing cold cases like the Zodiac Killer and Flight CPF 21. Applying our knowledge of criminology, we designed escape rooms that not only reflected our personal interests but also honed our problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
Recently, on Friday the 13th of October, our GATE class embarked on an exciting excursion led by Ms Bunten and Mr Kommer. Our first destination was Murdoch University, where we had the privilege of attending a session with presenter Jason Dohle. He enlightened us about the criminal mindset, factors that make homes susceptible to burglaries, and potential strategies for prevention. Following a refreshing break and some bubble tea at the Murdoch Student Hub, we engaged in a fascinating Psychology workshop. This session exposed us to various psychological tricks our brains play on us, offering a glimpse into the intriguing field that we could explore further at Murdoch University.
Our journey continued to Fremantle’s ‘Escape Hunt,’ where we split into two groups and put our problem-solving and collaborative skills to the test. Both groups successfully completed the challenge with minutes to spare. Post the thrilling escape rooms, our teachers treated us to a delightful dinner at Grill’d, followed by dessert. The highlight of our night was the ‘Torchlight Tour’ at Fremantle Prison, beginning at 7 pm. During this haunting experience, we explored the prison’s grim history, venturing through different divisions with varying degrees of severity in crimes and chilling tales. Notable locations included the Solitary Confinement Cells and ‘The Gallows,’ the prison’s former execution chamber. As we huddled together to ease our fear, we revisited the knowledge from our Criminology unit studied earlier in the year within the comforting confines of the convict-created prison. This excursion not only deepened our understanding of our Criminology unit but also provided a fantastic opportunity to strengthen bonds with our classmates and delve into the rich history of Fremantle Prison.
