Teachers as Researchers & Innovators

We believe that our teachers are researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs

We are committed to understanding the science of learning and the art of teaching. Socrates saw teaching as ‘a unique exchange between the teacher and the student’. John Hattie’s latest research has pinpointed that it is HOW the teacher teaches rather than WHAT the teacher teaches which has the greatest variable on student achievement. Research continues to prove that when the teacher creates a safe and effective learning environment students thrive.

There is no doubt that effective teaching is an art. To observe an expert teacher leading a class by engaging with content, managing the dynamics of the classroom and monitoring student feedback, is to remind us of just how demanding and intense the work of a teacher really is. At Servite we believe we are all learners, and our teaching staff are continuously seeking to improve their own practice to be the best teachers that they can be.

All teaching staff are involved in a professional growth process and strive to improve learning outcomes in their classroom. They stay up to date with current research and trends and adapt their teaching and learning programs accordingly. Many of our staff attend local and interstate conferences and participate in international webinars. We recognise that teachers are learners too and that to be true to our philosophy of lifelong learning we must also be constantly learning and adapting.

Our Alexis Research Centre (ARC) caters for large and small group collaboration, with writeable surfaces on walls and desks, flat screens for displaying and creating digital content, independent study spaces, and access to the latest technology such as VR.

We emphasise the importance of research in the priority we give to our learning skills (critical thinking, creativity and communication) which we scope and sequence across all year levels. Our students are entering a world where these research skills will underpin all that they do. We acknowledge the importance
of technology as an accelerator of learning and harness its benefits to improve student learning outcomes.

Our teachers strive to become expert researchers and constantly use the latest educational research and data to further develop their own teaching practices. We regularly explore and model best educational practices and contemporary teaching methods in the ongoing pursuit of providing the best possible modern learning environment for our community.
