Year 12 General English students had the amazing opportunity to learn from Perth-based graphic novelist Shane McCarthy – the only Australian to ever be the voice of Batman for DC Comics!
“The year 12 General English classes were fortunate and privileged to have a visit from Perth-based freelance writer, Shane McCarthy, last Wednesday to coincide with the students designing their own graphic novel masterpieces.
Shane has been writing graphic novels for the giants of the industry – Marvel and DC Comics – and has the honour of being the only Australian writer to be the ‘voice’ of Batman. This talented and passionate writer provided some tips, technical advice and inspiration on how to write a graphic novel.
He outlined the process of how to publish a graphic novel: from brainstorming an idea, to collaborating with artists such as inkers and colourists, to creating the final text ready for publishing and enjoyed by fans worldwide.
Students were inspired:
💬 “It was very interesting and helpful.” – Natalia
💬 “He challenged our views on AI.” – Marcin
💬 “It opened my eyes to the process of making comics.” – Madison
The workshop concluded by Shane stressing the importance of art in the community and the need to ‘suffer’ for your work to create something authentic and appealing.”
