When in Rome: Year 7s Step Back in Time!

Topic Learning
Date June 3, 2025

On Tuesday 27th May (Week 5), the Humanities Department transported our Year 7 cohort back in time for our annual Roman Day! This exciting event gives students the chance to fully immerse themselves in the world of Ancient Rome, studying, acting, dressing, and even eating like true Romans to bring history to life.

The day kicked off with engaging presentations run by our Humanities staff on various aspects of Roman life, including entertainment, fashion, art, daily routines, and warfare. Students rotated through the lower Shannahan classrooms, discovering what it meant to be Roman.

Next, it was time to feast! The Year 7’s gathered for a Roman-inspired lunch, sharing platters of cold meats, cheeses, and olives with their classmates, enjoying the flavours of the ancient world.

In the afternoon, students wore togas and took part in the Amazing Roman Race. Working in teams, they raced through a series of fun, themed challenges, competing to earn denarius coins and test their knowledge and creativity. The excitement and teamwork on display was fantastic!

The day concluded with a celebration of effort and enthusiasm. Prizes were awarded for the best dressed Romans and the victorious team from the Amazing Race. A big congratulations to Sam C (SC3) and Savannah H (SE4), our best-dressed winners! And congratulations to our winners from the activities.

Overall, Roman Day was a huge success – a memorable, hands-on learning experience that brought Ancient Rome vividly to life.

We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year!
