Topic Community
Date August 18, 2023

Community is at strength here at Servite. Building a connected school community enhances learning outcomes and supports collaboration and well-being for the entire school. A positive school environment directly benefits students, their learning and their well-being. This term we have certainly felt the joy in our community and the unity in our school. We have come together to celebrate, learn, watch and even to dance!

We have had many incredible community and happy events in the first 5 weeks of term.

Languages Week

Well done to our new Head of Languages, Prof. Millimaci for leading a fantastic week. Thank you to all our language teachers and students for creating a week of fun and food. Although I lost the first round of the Briscola tournament, it still was a great way to start the week.

I would especially like to thank Teresa Thomas, her dad, and the entire school for our record setting event of the most amount of people dancing the Tarantella at any one time! Watch the video on our Facebook page here.

High School Musical

Last week was the College production of High School Musical – what an incredible show with every night selling out! I am very proud of our school community for coming together to stage such a fabulous production. Our students were involved in every aspect of the show –  from performing on stage, making the set, assisting backstage, coordinating the sound and lighting to helping front of house.

Congratulations to everyone in the musical and to our incredible staff for coordinating the show!

Interpriory Athletics

Our Interpriory Athletics carnival at the State Athletics Stadium was a day of joy and participation. It brought me great happiness to see our students participating, our staff encouraging and our community cheering. Thank you to the parents who came to support us and the alumni who visited on the day.

Congratulations to St Anthony who won the carnival and Our Lady of Sorrows who won the Grenville Gorilla! You can read all about the day here.

Sporting News

I would like to congratulate the Year 10 Girls who won the Dockers Cup at the recent AFL Carnival. Well done to you all! You showed strength in teamwork and cooperation, a great combination for a tough day of football.

Congratulations to our Year 10 Boys who also won their Soccer ACC Senior Boys Competition completing the entire season undefeated! Well done!

Congratulations also to our Senior Boys Soccer team who are in the Grand Final of the ACC Senior Boys Championship. The Grand Final will be played next Wednesday at 3.50pm at Litis Stadium. If you are free, we would love for you to come and support our community!

We have had many students who have been traveling recently representing the state of WA in various sporting competitions – we are proud of your resilience, determination and grit leading to your success. Congratulations to you all.

Student Recognition

Congratulations to our Year 9 iCurious students who were selected to compete in the finals of the Just Start It Competition. Abbey Hanna, Lewis Dimovski, Joshua Barlow and Zaki Azimi represented the College well and showcased a great start up idea. Well done!

Congratulations to Deborah Mwenelokole for her nomination in the Fra Angelico Award at this week’s Angelico Art display. Deborah’s piece titled ‘Mbete Ya Bikira Maria’ (Virgin Mary) came a close second for the State’s top award the ‘Fra Angelico’. What an achievement – congratulations Deborah and her teacher Ms Lombardi.

Father’s Day Breakfast

The College would like to celebrate our fathers as we recognise and thank them for the extraordinary role they play in our community.

All dads, father figures and friends are very warmly welcome, along with grandparents, uncles and other family members. Students are invited to join their families for this special event Thursday, 31 August. To register click here.

Student Absences

A friendly reminder that the Absentee SMS Line is to be used to collect incoming absentee text messages only. This line is not to be used for voice messages or for sending Medical Certificates. Any other issues regarding absentees need to be sent to absent@servite.wa.edu.au.

All Medical Certificates are to also be sent to the email address above. As always, please remember to notify the school of your child’s absence as per school policy.

St Philip’s Day

On Wednesday 23 August the College will be celebrating the Feast of St Philip Benizi with a Mass that all staff and students will attend. Mass will commence at 9.00am in the College Gymnasium and a normal school day will follow after the Mass.

Servite Day

On Thursday 24 August the College will be celebrating Servite Day (formerly St Philip’s Day). On this day, students will follow an alternate timetable commencing with a Homeroom Quiz in the morning, followed by a Memorial Football Match with Staff versus Year 12 Students. We remember the lives of past Servite Community members who have passed away at this time. A festival of games and treats will take place after football match and the day will conclude with a Talent Show.

The timetable of the day can be found here.

Students may wear their Priory Uniform on Servite Day and are asked to bring their own morning tea and lunch or purchase from the café. Students will be able to purchase tokens for $1 each during Homeroom that morning which they can use to purchase drinks, game entry and treats. Money raised on the day will be donated to LifeLink.

Please don’t forget that the College will be closed on Friday, 25 August and Monday, 28 August for Staff Professional Development. We hope you enjoy the long weekend!

Thank you and take care!
