Year 11 & 12 General Outdoor Education Canoeing Expedition

Topic Learning
Date October 11, 2024

Last Term, our Year 11 & 12 General Outdoor Education students embarked on a 22km canoeing expedition along the Blackwood River, known to the Noongar people as “ Moodiarrup,” which means “ place of the Moodjar tree”( WA Christmas Tree). This river holds significant cultural value for the Noongar People, the traditional custodians of the land.

The journey began at Sue’s Bridge, but were soon met with an unexpected thunderstorm that dropped 30millilitres of rain! Due to fast-moving water and rapids from the previous nights’ thunderstorm – the expedition was relocated 12kms further downstream to safer waters. Despite the challenges, the experience was enriched by the unique wildlife sightings, including endangered species, reminding us of the delicate balance of the natural environment we were navigating.

In the evening, students gathered around a campfire, where some experienced their first toasted marshmallow. In addition to the marshmallow toasting, students honed their outdoor cooking skills by preparing amazing meals on Trangias, where no student went hungry. Throughout the expedition, students practiced the 7 Leave No Trace Principles, ensuring that our presence left the natural surroundings undisturbed. This journey along Moodiarrup was not just a physical challenge but also an opportunity to connect with the land’s cultural heritage and appreciate the natural beauty of this significant river. Our last campsite was at Chapman Pool, where we reflected on the expedition and the experiences shared throughout the expedition.
