Advent Reflection

This coming Sunday, 3 December is the start of the liturgical season of Advent. Advent occurs in the four weeks before Christmas and is a time where Catholics start to prepare for the Feast of Christmas.

Many of us are busy at this time of year, spending time shopping and preparing menus for celebrations with friends and family. These are important aspects of preparing for Christmas, but the season of Advent provides us with an opportunity to slow down and to wait with anticipation for the joy of the celebration of the birth of Christ. We recognise that Jesus is truly ‘Emmanuel’ which means God with us. We can see Jesus in each person when we recognise their God given dignity, especially those who are on the margins of society.

One of the ways our community has been preparing for Christmas is through our Vinnies Christmas Hampers appeal. Our families have been so generous once again this year which is a testament to our community’s understanding of our call as Servites to serve those in and around our community. Thank you for your generosity, it is because of you that families in our surrounding postcodes will be able to enjoy Christmas that little bit more.

As we journey through the next four weeks of Advent, may we imitate our Mother Mary by pondering the Word of God in our hearts and allowing it to influence our lives and actions.
