This month we had several students compete in the Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (OzCLO) for the first time. This is an online, team-based competition that runs nationally every year.
Three teams of four were made up from some of our GATE (Gifted & Talented) students from years 8 & 10.
Students had to use their problem-solving skills to figure out the grammar of foreign languages. This year, their data sets were drawn from Umbrian, the Permyak language of north-eastern Russia, the Nizaa language of Cameroon, the Tidore language of Indonesia, and Lardil; an indigenous Australian language from Mornington Island.
The competition exposes students to the diversity of human languages and is an excellent bridge between the arts and sciences.
Three Servite teams participated were:
Lawrence Li (Y10)
Eha Bhujbal (Y10)
Ashley Aniban (Y10)
Joshua Fazari (Y8)
Sofia Trimboli (Y10)
Ema Garic (Y10)
Sofia Jacobs (Y8)
Diane Jacob (Y8)
Sofia Song (Y10)
Marian Vales (Y10)
Maria Syvolap (Y8)
Yashki Dalal (Y8)
Students attended three training sessions before school as part of our iCurious program.
