This term in Geography, we have been looking at the global spatial distribution of a specific commodity, to study how it can spread all around the world. In our class, our focus has been McDonalds. To assist with our studies, on Thursday the 8th of August, we went to McDonald’s in Tuart Hill to talk with the licensee owner, Terry, and learn more about how a hot dog stand in California diffused globally to become one of the biggest fast-food restaurants in the world.
Upon our arrival, we were met by Terry, and completed a Q&A session to get a better understanding of the global commodity. We learnt about how they contribute to the community, their most popular menu items (chicken nuggets), and their least popular (the Fillet O’Fish), and how Terry is a part of a corporation that has spread to 119 countries, has over 39,000 stores, contributes to communities around the world, has provided people with jobs all around the world and you with some of your favourite fast-food goods.
After our Q&A session, we had our lunch break, which we were all very much looking forward to, and had a debate over the superior McFlurry, M&M or Oreo (the vote was 4 for M&Ms and 8 Oreo). We then completed some observation work and got to have a tour through the kitchen to learn more about the behind the scenes.
We concluded our time by ordering some snacks for the walk back to school, thanking Terry for his time, and leaving with more knowledge than we arrived with, which will be relevant when it comes to our depth study work.
