Students in the PES ATAR class had the opportunity to go to WAIS in Mt Claremont. They had a unique opportunity to learn content that related to the ATAR course, meet high class professional athletes and watch them train and experience firsthand exercise physiology technology in laboratories.
Students first sat down for a nutritional presentation with one of the Sports Nutritionists. There was good discussion on the amount of carbohydrates, fat and protein content found in foods and it was interesting for students to learn real life examples of what our WA athletes eat.
After a tour of the facility by a WA cyclist, Domenic Crupi and Manav Vohra completed a VO2 Max test, pushing themselves to the limits. Students recorded Perceived Rate of Exertion, Blood lactate levels, heart rate and other measurements. Following this, students then completed a cycling assessment in an environmental chamber. Making them more aware of how athletes acclimatise prior to leaving Australia for world class events.
Recovery session had to be the favourite. Students cooled down by moving from a 39 degree pool to a 14 degree pool. Alternating at certain intervals in order for their bodies to cool correctly. They then finished off in the 27 degree whirlwind pool and were able to enjoy the motion of the circulation zone.
Overall students learnt and experienced a very unique opportunity, whilst having the ability to ask specific questions to current athletes in training.
