This term in Geography we have been looking at urbanisation and the various challenges experienced by Perth as a result of the processes of urbanisation. To help with our studies, last week, our Year 12 ATAR Geography class went on an excursion around Perth to explore the different aspects of our city’s urban development.
The day started at Glendalough Station, where we met to start the day and travel by train to Cockburn Central. Upon our arrival to Cockburn, we didn’t let the rain stop us, as we walked around the area surrounding the train station, taking note of the different types of housing and amenities present, and the importance of transport hubs like this in. To escape the rain, we sought shelter in a local café, allowing us to observe the area more and discuss our findings from our exploration.
From here, we travelled back to the city and walked to Elizabeth Quay. Upon arrival, we learnt about how this area was redeveloped, and explored the role of this iconic area within the CBD and discussed the challenges and benefits of urban renewal projects.
Our journey then took us through Perth’s CBD, where we based ourselves whilst conducting various scavenger hunts to identify key urban processes like land use competition, renewal, and the effects of urban sprawl within the CBD and in Northbridge.
I would like to thank Ms Prendergast for organising this excursion and Mrs O’Connor for accompanying us on our trip.
